SWAP has a long history of saving endangered land Friends of the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit land trust and a chapter of the Foundation for Small Wilderness Area Preservation, a national nonprofit. Edgar Wayburn (five-time Sierra Club chairman), Emily Polk (parks activist), Ansel Adams (renowned nature photographer), and Margaret Owings (founder of Friends of the Sea Otter) established SWAP in 1970 based on the idea that people closest to an endangered property will work hardest for its preservation. There have been thirteen incorporated chapters of the Foundation for Small Wilderness Area Preservation and together we have helped acquire thousands of acres of California's natural landscapes from the San Francisco Bay area to Southern California. These special places are now safe from the threat of development and open to the public as preserve, park and open space.
